The referendum on the separation of Sudan’s south cannot be a
precedent for Azerbaijan, Ali Gasanov, deputy head of the department
for social-political affairs of the presidential administration, told
Trend today.

He explained that the decision was made by the people of Sudan. As far
as Nagorno-Karabakh is concerned, the Azerbaijani part of the
population was driven out, and only the Armenian population remains.
Some politicians believe that the referendum in Sudan could become a
precedent for settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Gasanov said that a referendum will only be possible if the population
of Nagorno-Karabakh returns. He noted that, according to international
law, a territory cannot be transferred to a different country. There
cannot be a separate legal regime in a territory.

“Azerbaijan is taking the most proper steps in settling the conflict
in terms of international law,” Gasanov said.
