Memorial in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is holding a memorial for the 20th anniversary of the
tragedy on January 20. On this day in 1990 the Soviet army entered
Baku. Force was used against protests on the streets and squares.
People were protesting against aggressive acts of Armenia which had
territorial demands and against support its from the USSR.


137 people were killed, 744 were injured, 841 were arrested. The
Azerbaijani parliament passed a decision in 1994 making January 20 a
Memorial Day.


State authorities, diplomats and civilians will visit the Alley of Shekhids.
Baku police will work in special mode. Transport on the Parliament
Avenue and Mehdi Hussein Street will be closed from 08.00 to 18.00.


Azerbaijani embassies abroad organized special events for Azerbaijani
communities.


The dead will be honored with a minute of silence. Vehicles, cars and
trains will sound their horns. State flags will be lowered.
