First Islamic TV channel to appear in Russia in early spring

The first Russian Islamic TV channel is expected to begin broadcasting
in late February - early March of this year, the chairman of the
Council of muftis of Russia (SMR) has announced, RIA Novosti reports.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, at a meeting for the support of
Muslim religious organizations of the North Caucasus in August 2009,
suggested opening a channel aimed at teaching  and explaining the
fundamental principles of Islam.

According to the Mufti, the main content of the channel will be
educational programs. In his view, a new satellite channel will help
to reduce Islamophobic sentiments in society.
