Opening Ceremony of Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku won hearts of millions

As Director General for operational issues of the Organizing Committee of the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku, Mark Loynd, said today, the opening ceremony of, which was held yesterday, "won hearts of millions".

"The opening ceremony was broadcasted in more than 55 countries of the world. This is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular events in the world of sports," he said.

He recalled that first sets of medals of the 4th Islamic Games in Baku will be awarded today and explained why Libya, Kuwait and Sudan are not participating in the Games.

"All three countries initially prepared for the Games in Baku, but Libyans had financial problems, Kuwait team is currently dealing with the IOC, and the reasons for Sudan's absence are not clear," he said.

The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games are held in Baku from May 8 to 22. Athletes will compete at 16 sports facilities in 20 types of sports - 17 Olympic and three non-Olympic ones. Competitions in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics were included in the program of Islamic Solidarity Games for the first time at the initiative of the First Vice President of Azerbaijan, President of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, Mehriban Aliyeva.
