The Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance has
reported an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) on the territory of
the Republic of Adygea. A quarantine has been announced in connection
with the epidemic, RIA Novosti reports.

At the time of the outbreak of the disease, believed to be the 24th of
January, there were 48 infected wild boars.

African swine fever (Montgomery disease) was first recorded in 1903 in
South Africa. Under natural conditions, domestic and wild pigs are
susceptible to the infection. The disease poses no threat to human
health, but is extremely dangerous to livestock, since there is no
cure or vaccine.
