EU rejects Turkey's European integration?
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe current political situation in Turkey does not allow to continue negotiations on its accession to the European Union, the official representative of the French government, Christoph Kastaner said.
"One thing is certain: the current political situation in Turkey does not allow us, considering our present position, to continue the negotiations, exchange the views and expectations with regard to strengthening integration with Turkey," he said.
At the same time, Kastaner stressed that the general dialogue between Europe and Turkey must continue, but the negotiations on Turkey's accession to the EU "are in any case suspended.’’ ‘’This is the reality today," the official representative of the French government concluded.
In turn, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking in the Bundestag, said that Europe needs to discuss a possible cessation of the negotiations on Turkey's accession to the European Union at the next summit.
”At the next EU summit I will propose to discuss the future relations with Turkey, including the issue of postponing or stopping the negotiations," she said.
Merkel pointed out that the EU member states should show cohesion on this issue. "It would be strange if the European Union quarrels in front of (Turkish President Recep Tayyip) Erdogan",TASS quotes the German politician as saying.
The Chancellor noted that "the developments in Turkey is a matter of serious concern," adding that the country "is moving away from the path of the rule of law at a very fast speed’’
The official representative of the Cabinet of Ministers of Germany, Steffen Seibert, said yesterday, that the next meeting of the EU leaders is scheduled for October.
