Egypt on brink of civil war

Supporters of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak have entered the Tahrir Square in Cairo riding horses and camels. Clashes between supporters and opposition of the president continue.


Media say Mubarak is supported by police officers dressed in civilian
clothes. Russia 24 channel showed footage of stone attacks.


RIA Novosti reports that there are many injured. The military do not
intervene, they left the scene leaving several tanks behind. The
police arrest journalists. Crowds take away cameras, the protesters
say it is police officers dressed in civilian clothes.


Tear gas is used at the central square in Cairo, Al Arabia reports. RIA
Novosti said that the Egyptian army will send in infantry to stop the
fights. TV channels say that there are approximately 500 people
injured.


The authorities of Cairo deny rumors about urges of European states
and the USA to hand over power, official spokesman of the Egyptian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Husam Zaki said.


USA, France, UK, Turkey and the diplomatic service of the European
Union urged Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to start handing over the
power.


The mass protests in Egypt are ongoing for 9 days. The protesters
demand political and economic reforms and resignation of President
Mubarak. The president said that he will resign after his terms of
office end in September this year and promised drastic reforms and
preparations for a peaceful transition of power.
