New Kyrgyz parliament speaker appointed

Dastan Jumabekov was elected as speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament today.

80 legislators voted for Jumabekov's candidacy and 32 voted for the candidacy of Iskhak Masaliyev in a voting by secret ballot. Five MPs were against both candidates.

Masaliyev was nominated by his faction Onuguu-Progress and Dastan Jumabekov was nominated by the majority coalition, AKIpress reported.

Speaker of Parliament Chynybai Tunsunbekov stepped down earlier today to "preserve stability in the country".
