Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has announced that very soon local taxi drivers will have to undergo mandatory registration in order to offer their service.

"We will gradually establish new standards for taxi services in Tbilisi, to make the service secure and comfortable both for local residents and the country’s guests,” Kaladze said, noting that his office was now working on a bill to regulate the issue.

The initial stage of taxi regulations will be simple and those who are involved in the activity will have to bring their identity documents and driving licenses to the local municipality.

"At the first stage the drivers will have to present documents to undergo registration. The stage will enable us to find out what is going on in the field as the taxi system has not been regulated for many years and we have no definite information how many people are engaged with the activity,” Deputy Tbilisi Mayor Maia Bitadze said.

Kaladze also announced the increase of fines for transit vehicles in case of moving in the capital in restricted hours during the daytime, Agenda.ge reported.

He said that some drivers of transit vehicles were not afraid of the fine which amounted to GEL 20 and now the fine would be increased to GEL 500.
