Threat of chronic Balkanization in the Middle East
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaIf Syria losses its sovereignty it will lead the Middle East into a state of constant war, the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said.
According to him, if that happens, "chronic Balkanization" will begin in the region.
"We're seeing this disunity, discord, and it's a huge threat. If this continues, if unity and sovereignty can't be saved, then Balkanization may begin. All participants of the settlement process would like to avoid that," he said at the 54th Munich Security Conference.
He added that the only way out of this situation is a political process that will help to avoid the threat of revival of terrorism in the country.
In this context, he highlighted the importance of the Astana process."The Astana process is very helpful. It fulfilled its goals. Russia, Turkey and Iran have the opportunity to contribute to de-escalation. Sochi fulfilled its task, we decided to establish a constitutional commission in Geneva. Only the UN can provide legitimacy and we will be actively involved in this process," RIA Novosti quoted De Mistura as saying.
