Japan's government has picked the western city of Osaka to host the G20 summit in 2019, Osaka Prefecture official, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said.

The choice of Osaka, Japan’s second-largest city after Tokyo, was first reported by public broadcaster NHK, the Japan Times reported.

Fukuoka and Aichi Prefecture had also expressed interest in hosting the leaders’ gathering, but Osaka "is superior as a host site," a source close to the Prime Minister’s Office said.

This year’s summit is to be held in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires.
