Azerbaijan and the European Union are having a defining moment in the
energy sphere, spokesman of the EU Ronald Kobia said in Baku, Trend
reports.

The president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso,
recently visited Baku. Energy was the main topic of his talks. The
sides agreed to hold regular meetings. One such meeting was based on
the memorandum signed between Azerbaijan and EU in 2006.

The memorandum involves making Azerbaijani energy laws meet the world
standards, Kobalia said, adding that the second primary issue is
energy security. Azerbaijan is interested in selling energy resources
to Europe. Special attention is paid to the Southern Gas Corridor.

Another stage in supporting Azerbaijan is improving energy efficiency
in Azerbaijan. The country has great potential in using solar and wind
resources.

Azerbaijan and the EU signed the joint declaration on the Southern Gas
Corridor in Baku in January.

The Southern Corridor is a priority energy project of the EU. It is
aimed at diversifying the routes and sources of energy supplies,
improving energy security. The Southern Corridor includes the Nabucco
pipeline, the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), White Stream and ITGI
(Turkey-Greece-Italy pipeline).
