Russia win three titles but miss out on two at European Wrestling Championships
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaHosts Russia won three freestyle titles as the European Wrestling Championships continued in Kaspiysk, but were denied two more by last-gasp efforts, Insidethegames.biz reported yesterday.
It would have been a full house of five golds from five for the home team had it not been for the efforts of two Azerbaijan competitors.
Haji Aliyev stunned the home crowd with a late surge to clinch gold in the men's 65 kilograms division. He was behind for much of his contest against Russia's Ilias Bekbulatov but won 8-7 after a takedown in the last 15 seconds of the match.
Azerbaijan also enjoyed late success over Russia in the men's 57kg gold medal match as Giorgi Edisherashvili utilised a four-point lateral drop with two seconds left to beat Zavur Uguev 4-3.
