US deputy state secretary holds meeting in Tbilisi

US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg has held his first meeting with public figures in Tbilisi. It was a closed-door meeting at the US embassy in Georgia, Trend reports.


Officials from non-governmental organizations and human rights activists were at the meeting. Steinberg observed the information on human rights protection, Georgian human rights activist Giorgi Tugushi said.


Tugushi said that he presented his report to Steinberg, which will be considered at the Georgian parliament.


Non-governmental organizations described the media situation in Georgia, underlining the restrictions on electronic media in the country.


US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon is accompanying Steinberg on his visit to the South Caucasus. Steinberg and Gordon will have a closed-door meeting with the Georgian president. The press-conference the US officials were due to give at Tbilisi airport was cancelled.


The US delegation arrived in Tbilisi from Yerevan. It will head to Baku later today.
