Armenian opposition calls for early elections

A several-thousand-strong meeting of the opposition Armenian National Congress began today at 17.30 local time in front of the Institute of Ancient Armenian Manuscripts in Yerevan .

The meeting commemorated the third anniversary of the tragic events of March 1, 2008, when 10 people died protesting against the results of presidential elections, NEWS.am reports.

The meeting was headed by the leader of the ANC, the first president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the head of the People's Party of Armenia Stepan Demirchian, and chairman of the Political Council of Republic party Aram Sargsyan.

Aram Manukyan, in his opening speech, stressed that "over the past three years, the Armenian authorities have done nothing to disclose the murders of civilians."

The participants in the meeting observed a minute's silence in memory of the victims of the tragic events of March 1, 2008.
