Parliament deputies injured in clashes with police in Armenia

Deputies of the Heritage fraction have been injured in clashes with police in Republic Square, near the parliament building in Armenia, News Armenia reports.


The incident occurred on the square where street traders were protesting against the mayor’s prohibition on street trading. Witnesses say that a protester attempted to enter the government building, he was stopped by a police officer. A fight started.


Deputies of the Heritage, particularly Zaruya Postanzhyan, tried to protect the protester. Deputy Anait Bashkhyan was hospitalized, deputy Larisa Alaverdyan is at a police station.


The party leader Armen Martirosyan and leader of the Heritage fraction Stepan Safaryan were also at the scene.


Armenian authorities, represented by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, must pay for the disorders and injuries, Safaryan said.
