Recent intensive diplomacy has succeeded in averting war in Idlib in northwest Syria, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said.

"Intensive responsible diplomacy over the last few weeks-pursued in my visits to Ankara and Damascus, followed by the Iran-Russia-Turkey Summit in Tehran and the meeting (in) Sochi-is succeeding to avert war in Idlib with a firm commitment to fight extremist terror. Diplomacy works," Zarif wrote on Twitter.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi, in turn, said that Tehran welcomes the agreement between Russia and Turkey on the situation in Syria’s Idlib Governorate, which was signed in Sochi.

"The agreement declared after a meeting between the Russian and Turkish leaders in Sochi became an important step towards solution to the issue of terrorist groups remaining in Syria," reads the statement published on the website of the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
