Sklifosovsky monument inaugurated in honor of First Moscow State Medical University's anniversary
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaA solemn opening ceremony of the monument to famous Russian surgeon Nikolay Sklifosovsky was held today in Moscow. It was installed next to the clinical center No. 1 of First Moscow State Medical University in honor of the university's 260th anniversary.
The monument consists of Sklifosovsky's figure 3.5 meters high and a 4-meter pedestal. Famous Russian sculptor Salavat Shcherbakov told the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza about the process of creating a monument.
"This monument includes everything that was told us by experts and historians of the Museum of Medicine on Bolshaya Pirogovskaya, and how we imagined the era of the great development of Russian culture in the 19th century. We showed four sides of Sklifosovsky’s life on the pedestal - as a military doctor, as a great teacher and as the creator of a medical city," he said.
Salavat Shcherbakov also congratulated First Moscow State Medical University on its 260th anniversary and noted the importance of the medical profession. "Physicians play an enormous role in our life since birth. Only real enthusiasts can do this hard work. We congratulate the university and worship physicians, learn from them both discipline and professionalism. Medicine is a very intellectual profession, but at the same time it is spiritual," the sculptor stressed.
Sklifosovsky worked as dean of the Medical Faculty of the Imperial Moscow University for more than 10 years, which was later transformed into First Moscow State Medical University. The Clinical city was founded on the Maiden's Field with his assistance more than a century ago.
