The names of famous Georgian wines may be patented as trademarks in Russia

The Central Kizlyar Research Institute of wine, beer, soft drinks and beverages (TSKNII) has submitted a proposal to the Russian patent agency for a dozen trademarks with the names of famous Georgian wines: Kindzmarauli, Khvanchkara, Alazani Valley, Akhasheni, Tsinandali, Gurdzhani, Gareji, Mukuzani, Napareuli and Vazisubani, Georgia Online reports.

In 2006, the Federal Service introduced a complete ban on the supply and sale in Russia of wine and wine materials from Georgia and Moldova, arguing that they have a high pesticide and iron content. Despite this, the Russian market offers several Georgian wines, produced outside Georgia but having Georgian names, the director of the Independent Wine Club Dmitry Fedorov said.
