Turkish premier warns against NATO operation in Libya

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned about the threat and lack of necessity for a NATO military operation in Libya, he said at a summit in Istanbul on Monday, RIA Novosti reports.

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and former US Vice-President Al Gore were attending the forum.

Turkey is one of the oldest NATO members and has the second largest army in the alliance.
Disorders in Libya have been ongoing since February 15. People are protesting against their leader Muammar Gaddafi, who has been in power for over 40 years. The country split into Gaddafi’s west and the east controlled by the rebels. Benghazi is the center of the rebels.

Libyan air forces are bombing the rebels at Marsa Brega and a city located 80 km to the west, Adzhabia. Media report that peaceful citizens were also killed.

The Libyan authorities deny deaths among peaceful citizens. The government in Tripoli says that Al Qaeda is supporting the rebels.
