The murder of Moscow skiers in the Elbrus Mountain area has had a negative impact on the tourism industry in the region. More than 80% of the regional population is involved in the tourist economy and their profits have dramatically decreased since the tragic events. Despite a counter-terrorism operation lead by the law enforcement bodies in the area, the tourism industry has not yet managed to recover. Trying to a find a solution to the problem, the head of Kabardino-Balkaria, Arsen Kanokov, has met with the parents of young men who are on a federal warrant list for terrorism.
Parents of the alleged terrorists have promised to try to contact their children, providing that they will face a trial open to the media and based on justice. At the same time they expressed their concerns regarding their status in the eyes of the local law enforcement bodies.
The program “On preventing terrorism and extremism in Kabardino-Balkaria” for 2011-2014 is expected to release tensions existing in society and facilitate inter-ethnic dialogue. The program will receive more than 14 million rubles from the republic’s budget.
Kanokov said that at the moment Kabardino-Balkaria is implementing the new “Safe City” safety system, which provides stricter methods of safety.
