The situation in Armenia. Escalation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaArmenia and Azerbaijan have recently exchanged prisoners of war and bodies of their dead soldiers. Such an agreement was made with the help of Russia and the OSCE Minsk Group. In general, the situation surrounding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is improving. Nevertheless, there is a certain danger.
Social unrest in Armenia may lead to further escalation of the conflict. The situation in Armenia is very unstable nowadays. Since the end of the winter the Middle East has been in continuing crisis, and many experts believe that the revolutionary fever could hit the post-Soviet republics, especially the countries of the South Caucasus. Armenia is the most likely country to adopt the Egyptian scenario. The Armenian opposition has already called upon Armenian citizens to fight for their well-being. The Armenian National congress has organized series of demonstrations and a political crisis is looming.
The reason is the worsening economic situation and the government's inability to overcome the economic crisis. The country’s authorities have left small and medium-sized enterprises unprotected and pay no attention to the system of social insurance. This causes rage in the population.
In such circumstances, the escalation of the Azerbaijani-Armenian conflict seems very probable. The last clash took place three years ago during the same political crisis in Armenia, and now it may happen again.
