Sergey Markov: Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan may achieve breakthrough during their meeting
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaArmenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will try to get any possible economic benefits at the upcoming meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Vienna, since it's necessary for internal political course of the new Yerevan, director of the Political Studies Institute Sergey Markov said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza, speaking about his expectations from the first round of negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement at the highest level in a year and a half.
"There can be very serious expectations, since they have an opportunity to achieve serious breakthrough. Nikol Pashinyan is full of energy and hopes for economic breakthrough in the development of Armenia, he stated that there's a need for economic revolution in the country. However, under existing blockade, they can only achieve some kind of tranformation, rather than effective growth. Now Armenian economy is cornered, and it can't escape without the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement. That's why Pashinyan set such an ambitious goal - escape from blockade and get access to global economy," he said.
"As for the economy, Armenia such significant sources of investments since Armenian diaspora is very influential and rich, but it will help the republic only if it has any profitable projects that have no significant risks. But in order for this to happen, they have to get rid of the blockade on Azerbaijani and Turkish borders. That's why Nikol Pashinyan desires to achieve progress. This can be done based on the “Kazan formula”, which was developed at the initiative of Russian President on the basis of Madrid Principles: economic blockade is removed in exchange for deoccupation of Azerbaijani regions around Nagorno-Karabakh and demilitarization of the border regions," Sergey Markov noted.
