US not interested in matching Russian nuclear weapons system for system

The United States does not seek to match Russia's nuclear weapons "system for system," US Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy David Trachtenberg said during a discussion at the Brooking Institution on Wednesday, Urdu Point reports.

"We are not interested in matching the Russians system for system," Trachtenberg said when asked if a new arms race between the United States and Russia is underway. "The Russians are doing a number things we are simply not doing."

Trachtenberg explained what the United States tries to do is "take modest steps in order to lower Russia's sense of confidence that what they are doing gives them some kind of exploitable advantage that could lead to a miscalculation on their part that we absolutely don't want to see."
