U.S. and France appoint representatives to the Libyan government in Benghazi

The U.S.  has appointed a representative to the opposition National Council of Libya, which the rebels have formed in Benghazi. The second largest Libyan city, Benghazi, located in the east of the country, remains the mainstay of the rebels, who are fighting against forces loyal to Gaddafi.

The U.S. wants to express support for the National Council, which serves as the interim administration, and so in the near future will send a representative to Benghazi – the experienced diplomat Chris Stevens, Reuters reports, citing a representative of the U.S. administration.

According to the source, France also decided to send an ambassador to Benghazi. French diplomat Antoine Sivan has arrived in Libya. His task is to establish contacts with the resistance forces on the ground.
