Freedom Square is symbol of an alternative political force

The demonstration on Freedom Square that took place on March 17 has changed the whole political situation in Armenia. The country’s authorities, which had paid no attention to the opposition, now have to deal with it. The Armenian National Congress, an opposition force, has proved that it’s a real political power.

The spokesman of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia announced that both opposition and the authorities are ready to cooperate, as no one is interested in further escalation of the conflict. President Sargsyan has also commented on the situation. He said that it’s very important to understand the difference between partisan and national interests. Both statements are remarkable.

The opposition’s rhetoric has also changed. Before the demonstration on Freedom Square the opposition claimed that country’s authorities are unable to solve the existing problems. After March 17, the opposition leader, ex-President of the country Levon Ter-Petrosyan, admitted that the ruling party has understood that the situation is extremely complicated and decided to take some measures.

As a result the opposition is becoming more and more popular. This will indeed affect the whole political situation in the country.
