German airline Lufthansa suspended flights over Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman and surrounding areas of land.

The decision, based on its own assessment, came from Germany's largest airline after Iran shot down a US drone with a surface-to-air missile, the Deutsche Welle reported

Earlier, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued an emergency order prohibiting U.S. operators from flying in an overwater area of Tehran-controlled airspace over the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman due to heightened tensions.

The U.S. carrier was joined by British Airways, KLM, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas Airways, and Singapore Airlines in rerouting flights to avoid the area.
