ICAO concerned about Armenia's attempts to start using Khankendi airport
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaArmenia has received a letter from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) referring to concerns of Azerbaijan in connection with the operation of the airport in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
This information was confirmed to News.am by press-secretary for General Administration of Civil Aviation of Armenia Nelly Cherchinyan, but she refused to reveal the content of the letter. Nelly Cherchinyan also left without comment the question of whether or not the General Directorate of Civil Aviation of Armenia plans to respond to this letter.
The work of Khankendi airport , which was built in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, has no international legal basis, said the head of the press-service of "Azerbaijan Airlines" Maharram Safarli. “This is contrary to all international conventions and will not be allowed by any international organization, including ICAO", he added.
Azerbaijan has already notified the International Civil Aviation Organization on its position on this question.
"Armenia and Azerbaijan should resolve the issue of flight safety before the opening of the airport in Khankendi t", said the U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan, Matthew Bryza.
