Socialist elected president of European Parliament

Italian member of the Socialists & Democrats bloc David-Maria Sassoli has been elected the new President of the European Parliament.

At today’s Parliament session he racked up 345 MEP votes. The overall number of registered ballots was 667.

Sassoli, a former journalist from Florence, has been a lawmaker in the EU parliament for a decade, Reuters reported.
