Presidential elections started today in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijani news agency Trend reports. The polling stations were opened at 7:00 a.m. local time. Polling stations will stay open until 20:00 p.m. The Kazakh authorities promise the most transparent elections in history.

A total of 1,059 accredited observers will be monitoring the elections in the country. The most numerous mission will be from the Commonwealth of Independent States (425 people) and the OSCE (357 people).

There are four candidates running for the presidency. They are incumbent President of the country Nursultan Nazarbayev , Communist Zhambyl Ahmetbekov, leader of the Patriots Party, Senator Gani Kasimov and Tabiyat Ecological Union leader Mels Eleusizov.

According to experts, the acting head of state will easily win the election. 70-year-old Nazarbayev has been in power for over 20 years, and according to opinion polls, is supported by the majority of the population. However, there have been some violations of the democratic procedure, showing that present-day administration is not certain about its legitimacy, ABC News reports.

Nazarbayev himself said that today's voting will determine Kazakhstan's future. "Today, there is another historic moment when the world pays attention to Kazakhstan," Nazarbayev is quoted by Trend as saying after casting his ballot. ВНИМАНИЕ!
