Ingush leader warns against hasty conclusion on Umarov death
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaIngush leader Yunus-Bek Yevkurov said that it is too early to discuss whether militant leader Doku Umarov is dead or not, urging DNA to be held first, RIA Novosti reports.
Police said that Doku Umarov may have been killed in a recent special operation in Ingushetia. An air strike near Verkhny Alkun and a land operation resulted in destruction of a militant base for training suicide-bombers. The National Counter-Terrorism Committee said that 17 militants were killed. Yevkurov said that they possibly killed 19 militants.
A police source told RIA Novosti that people from Chechnya acquainted with Umarov did not recognize him among any of the dead militants.
Doku Umarov is responsible for many crimes. He took responsibility for terrorist attacks at the Moscow subway and the Domodedovo International Airport.
Russia filed a request to the UN Security Council in November 2010 to put him on the list of dangerous terrorists. The USA postponed consideration of the request. The UN SC committee for sanctions against Al-Qaeda, Taliban movement, and related issues put Umarov on its consolidated list on March 11, 2011. UN members are to freeze Umarov’s assets, forbid his movement, prevent all assistance to Umarov, including provision of arms and finances.
