The U.S. president hosted a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden yesterday for the creation of space command within the military.
The ceremony was attended by the vice-president, Mike Pence; the defense secretary, Mark Esper; and Gen Jay Raymond, who will serve as the first commander of U.S. space command. He currently heads air force space command, which currently deals with the lion’s share of military space operations.
"This is a landmark day, one that recognises the centrality of space to America's security and defense. SpaceCom will ensure that America's dominance in space is never threatened," the Telegraph cited Trump as saying.
In June 2018, the U.S. President ordered the Department of Defense to create a much larger Space Force, a dedicated branch of the military equal to the existing forces, the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.
