Turkish Parliament continues considering constitutional amendments

The Turkish Parliament approved 6 out of 7 constitutional amendments
prepared by the ruling Justice and Development Party (JDP). The eighth
article (complicating the closing-down of parties) was not approved,
receiving only 327 votes, when 330 are needed, 6news reports.


The 7th amendment allowing for labor strikes received 337 votes. The
9th amendment establishing ombudsmen received 340 votes, with 69
countervotes.


The 10th amendment received 335 votes and 73 countervotes. This
amendment allows deputies to engage in legislative activities until
the term of office of their party closes.


The 11th amendment regulating deputies' election to the presidium of
parliament received 336 votes, with 70 countervotes.


The 12th amendment allowing servicemen to challenge decisions of the
High War Council received 338 votes, with 69 countervotes.


The 13th amendment allowing collective bargaining received 339 votes.


The 14th amendment establishing court control over disciplinary
punishments for state employees received 339 votes.


The 16th article, allowing civil courts to judge military cases, will
be considered together with the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th articles of
the constitutional amendments.
