At least 5 people have been killed and 92 injured as the result of a train derailment in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province.

The incident took place yesterday, as the train with some 250 passengers was on a 1,500-kilometer journey from Zahedan to Tehran.

Three women and one man lost their lives in the incident, Iran's Railways company confirmed.

The head of Sistan & Baluchestan's Red Crescent said 35 of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. At least 8 people had to be flown onboard helicopters due to their critical injuries.

During the incident, one of train's wagons derailed after hitting sand-covered rails in the Shuru area, some 60 kilometers southwest of Zahedan, PressTV reported.

The Iranian Railways was investigating the possible reason for the incident in coordination with local authorities.
