Georgian Security Council to acquire more powers

The Security Council of Georgia has acquired more powers according to amendments to the Law on National Security Council, which had already been reviewed in the first reading, Trend reports.

The purpose of the amendments is to define the authority for coordinating and managing all types of crises containing threats to national security, the memorandum to the bill says.

In its present form, the Georgian Security Council is an advisory body to the President of Georgia on military issues and organization of the country's defense policy, issues of domestic and foreign policy related to national security, stability and the rule of law, as well as for ultimate political decision-making on the security of the country.

In accordance with the changes, the council will become the principal organ for the adoption of final political solutions regarding crises that pose a threat to national security.
