Georgian parliament backs extension of state of emergency until May 22

The state of emergency has been extended in the country until May 22, 2020. The relevant decision was approved by the Georgian parliament with 97 votes (against10).

The decree issued by the President, which provides for certain restrictions during the state of emergency, was extended for the same period.

The opposition parties did not back the extension of the state of emergency. Members of the United National Movement and European Georgia called on the government to submit an anti-crisis plan and a report on the measures taken. According to them, the government should answer a question of how it intends to assist vulnerable citizens.

The state of emergency was declared in the country on March 21, 2020.
