Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday the text of a new constitution will be presented to the Turkish people for discussion next year, having overhauled the previous constitution in 2017 to grant his office sweeping powers.

"We have started to work for a new and civilian constitution for our people. The 1982 Constitution has lost its validity, the new constitution will be a product of a transparent process," Daily Sabah cited him as saying.

Highlighting that a new and civilian constitution for Turkey is inevitable, Erdoğan stated that it will comprise national history as well as the ever-evolving global context.

Erdogan revealed the plan in a speech to a congress of his ruling AK Party. He had said last month the AKP and its nationalist allies may start work on drafting a new constitution.
