Georgian parliament recognizes "Circassian genocide" by Russian Empire

The Parliament of Georgia at today's plenary session admitted the fact of genocide committed by the tsarist Russia against the Circassian people. 95 deputies out of 97voted for the adoption of the resolution, Georgia Online said.

The resolution of parliamentary committees recommended the Parliament of Georgia to:
1. Recognize the mass murder of Circassian (Adygei) during the Russian-Caucasian War and their forced removal from the historical homeland as an act of genocide, according to the Hague Convention IV of 18 October 1907 "On the Laws and Customs of War on Land" and the UN Convention of 9 December 1948 "On the Prevention and Punishment of genocide";

2. Recognize the Circassians forcibly deported from the homeland of in the period of the Russian-Caucasian war and after it as refugees under the UN Convention on July 28, 1951 "On the Status of Refugees".
