Turkish government websites attacked by hackers
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaWebsites of Turkish government structures have been attacked by the
international hacker group Anonymous as a protest against filtering of
content on the internet, which will start in August, RIA Novosti
reports.
Observers point out that the attack was organized three days prior to
parliamentary polls on June 12. The hackers may attack networks of the
Turkish Central Electoral Committee.
The first attack was called Operation Turkey and started on Thursday
at 18.00 (local time). It targeted the Department for Information and
Communication Technologies.
The meteorological and social protection services were also shut down.
Turkish citizens started mass protests against internet-filtering in
May. The Department for Information and Communication Technologies
plans to start filtering on August 22.
The department proposed four filters: standard, children’s, family and
home. This does not imply censorship, the department says.
Turkey blocked access to YouTube for 2.5 years. It started in May 2008
and ended in October 2010. The YouTube ban was used against videos
that had offended the memory of the late Turkish Leader Mustafa Kemal
Ataturk.
