A military parade will mark Army Day in Baku on June 26. This parade is expected to demonstrate all the technological advancements of the Azerbaijani army over the past 20 years and the present state of Azerbaijani military power.

Since the collapse of the USSR, Azerbaijan has held only two military parades: on October 9, 1992 and June 26, 2008. Azerbaijan depleted almost all its military resources during the war of 1992-1994 and was left with virtually no means of replenishing them. Since this time, Azerbaijan managed not only to restore its army, but also to equip it with up-to-date weaponry and military technologies. These achievements could already be seen during the parade of 2008. In 2011 Azerbaijan plans to spend over 3.5 billion dollars on its military needs, and this figure is 1.6 times higher than last year’s.

A considerable part of this sum will be spent on modernization of the army’s equipment and weaponry. The Azerbaijani military industry also received allocations. All in all, military expenditure will constitute 19.7% of Azerbaijan’s state budget.

All branches of the military forces will be present at the parade commemorating the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s independence. This year’s parade will also be the first one to demonstrate military equipment of Azerbaijani production. A lot of these items are constructed in cooperation with the Israeli company ‘Israeli Aeronautics’, following an agreement signed in 2009. Turkey is also one of Azerbaijan’s military equipment suppliers.
