Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke over the phone on Wednesday.

According to the statement made by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications, Guterres briefed Erdoğan about his recent contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The development comes two days after Guterres met Erdoğan in Ankara. After the meeting, the U.N. chief headed to the Russian capital, which will be followed by talks in Kyiv on Thursday.

"Follow-on discussions will be had with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Russian Defence Ministry," U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement after the meeting.

Guterres and Erdoğan "stressed the urgent need for effective access through humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians and deliver much-needed assistance to impacted communities," the U.N. said in a statement after Guterres met Erdoğan in Ankara.
