Death penalty may be banned in Uzbekistan

The death penalty may be abolished in Uzbekistan, the corresponding proposal was introduced in the draft law on amendments and additions to the Constitution, which was published in the parliamentary newspaper Narodnoye Slovo.

"The death penalty is prohibited in the Republic of Uzbekistan," the draft reads. Article 24 of the Constitution provides that the right to life is an inalienable right of every human being and is legally protected.

The death penalty as the highest measure of punishment has been abolished in Uzbekistan since January 1, 2008.
