Azerbaijan marks Day of Alphabet and Language of 2011

Azerbaijan is marking the Day of Alphabet and Language, The day was
established by National Leader Heydar Aliyev on August 9, 2011,
1news.az reports.


The order on improvement of the state language was signed on June 18, 2001.


Azerbaijan's first alphabet came from the ancient Albanians,
consisting of 52 letters. The Arabic language arrived in the 8th
century. Latin letters were introduced in the 19th century. Reform of
the graphics has been held three times since 1930s. Arabic letters
were used until 1929, latin in the period 1929-1939 and cyrillic in
1939-1991. Latin letters were restored in 1991.


Kazakhstan is currently studying Azerbaijan's switch to latin letters.
