Multi-party system introduced in Syria

Syrian President Bashar Assad has approved a multi-party system to
boost democracy in the country and improve the involvement of citizens
in politics, ITAR-TASS reports.

The government approved the initiative on July 24. Another vote is to
be held on August 7. The president needs 50 signatures for the new
system. The opposition has welcomed the move.
