A mass grave of residents of the Khojaly region who became victims of the Khojaly tragedy in 1992 was discovered in the village of Askeran in the Karabakh economic region of Azerbaijan. It is located near the walls of the Askeran fortress. Correspondents of Vestnik Kavkaza visited the site.
The information about the mass grave was received during investigation from Rashid Beglaryan, who admitted his participation in the extermination of the civilian population of the Khojaly region. According to him, during the capture of the Khojaly distrcit, civilians were provided with a corridor to exit the Khojaly region to the Aghdam district. However, along the way, civilians were shot and buried nearby the Askeran fortress.
After receiving this information, search work began, during which the mass grave was found. Presumably, the remains of at least 8 people from the Khojaly region were buried there. The work continues, the number of victims may increase.
