Foreign agents law: Georgian President's veto to be overridden on May 28
Read on the website Vestnik KavkazaThe Georgian parliament will hold a meeting next week to cancel Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili’s veto on the law on transparency of foreign influence, passed earlier, chairman of People's Power party Sozar Subari said.
He explained the veto will first be challenged by the Georgian Parliament's Legal Issues Committee on May 27, while a plenary session will be held the next day on May 28.
Consideration of the draft law began in April. Since then, large-scale protests have been held in Georgia.
On May 14, the Georgian Parliament adopted the law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence" in the third reading. Georgian President Salome Zourabishvili vetoed the law on May 18.
The law has been opposed by the US, the EU, the UN, NATO, the OSCE and the Council of Europe. Leaders of Georgia’s ruling party argue that it merely serves to ensure the transparency of foreign funding for the non-governmental sector and media.
