Students of the Abkhaz State University (ASU) made an amazing discovery during excavations in the Sukhumi fortress. The funeral amphorae, presumably of 5-6th centuries, were found.
“In ancient times, on the territory of Abkhazia, there was a ritual of burial in amphorae, including for children. Presumably, these amphorae may contain children's remains. We found one similar burial site earlier,”
– Dean of the ASU Faculty of History Alik Gabelia said.
The amphorae at the site indicate that these vessels could also be used in funeral rites. Thus, amphorae carry not only information about everyday life, but also about the rituals and beliefs of ancient civilizations.
