St-Petersburg governor Valetina Matvienko resigns

St-Petersburg governor Valetina Matvienko sent a letter of resignation from her current post to President Dmitry Medvedev, RIA Novosti reports.

Matviyenko overwhelmingly won municipal elections in St. Petersburg on Sunday receiving a mandate of a member of the Council of Federation.

She was required to win a seat as a deputy in a St Petersburg municipality in order to be eligible for the Federation Council speaker post.
