New chairman of Syrian National Transitional Council elected

Burgan Galyun, a political observer from Sorbonna, has become Chairman
of the National Transitional Council (NTC) of Syria. The NTC consists
of 94 people, RIA Novosti reports.

Syrian President Bashar Assad formed the NTC after four days of
negotiations in Istanbul. Initiatives to form the NTC were announced
in June. Disorders in Syria started in Deraa in March, spreading to
other regions. The UN says over 2,200 people have died. The opposition
is demanding the resignation of President Assad.
