Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze and the new EU Special
Representative for the South Caucasus and the Georgian Crisis,
Philippe Lefort, have discussed the situation in the South Caucasus,
Trend reports.

Lefort arrived in Tbilisi from Baku and will visit Yerevan today.

Vashadze congratulated Lefort, who had worked as the French ambassador
to Georgia in 2004-2007, wishing him success in his new appointment.

The sides discussed the Geneva negotiation process to prevent tensions
in the Caucasus, Georgian-Russian relations, the situation on the
occupied territories of Georgia and improvement of Georgian-EU ties.

Negotiations in Geneva were held after the Russian-Georgian conflict
in August 2008, according to the cease-fire agreement of August 12.

Georgia attacked South Ossetia on 8 August 2008. Its forces entered
Tskhinvali. Russian troops forced the Georgians out of the breakaway
republic and recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia
in late August. Tbilisi broke off all diplomatic relations with Moscow
and called the two republics occupied territories.
